American Revolutionary War Practice Test

What was the primary aim of the 1777–78 Monmouth Campaign?

To defend Philadelphia from British assault.

To secure New York Harbor.

To form a large international alliance.

To test and demonstrate improved Continental Army training and discipline against British forces.

After Valley Forge, the Continental Army had been drilled and reorganized, and the Monmouth Campaign was designed to put that training to the test. The fight at Monmouth Court House in 1778 served as a real-world trial of the army’s improved discipline, drill, and cohesion against a seasoned British force. Washington aimed to demonstrate that the troops could stand in line, maneuver, and fight effectively in open battle, showing both their reliability and growth since the brutal winter.

This focus on testing and proving the army’s readiness is what makes this choice the best. It wasn’t about defending Philadelphia, nor securing New York Harbor, nor pursuing a new international alliance; those were not the campaign’s primary goal. The outcome—a hard-fought, mostly orderly engagement that validated the Continental Army’s progress—helped establish the army as a credible fighting force.
